The Girls' Drama Club musical 『LILIUM ─Shoujo Junketsu Kageki─』 starring members of Morning Musume '14 and S/mileage, is currently receiving rave reviews on the internet.

The cast in 『Lilium』 consists of 7 members selected from Morning Musume '14, all of S/mileage, and 3 of the Hello! Project Kenshuusei. The entire cast of 16 members star as vampires held at a sanatorium.

The producer of this production was the producer/scriptwriter Suemitsu Kenichi. This will be the 3rd collaboration he has with Hello! Project following 『Stacies Shoujo Saisatsu Kageki』(2012)、『Warera Jeanne~Shoujo Seisen Kageki~』(2013).

For these idols, who normally sing and dance with bright smiles, to have them dive into the tragic and cruel love-hate drama of a vampire tale, it seems that while it has caused some conflicted feelings amidst the fans, but judging from the reactions on Twitter, it was almost shockingly well received despite that.

「That part was really great and the other scene was really awesome but I can't even find the words to describe how wonderful it is, only that Lilium was simply amazing」
「Lilium. A story that could only happen with the characters being the way they were. My desire to see a spin-off or even a novelization for more of the story is overwhelming. I'm sure there will be tons of fan-written fiction of this」
「The more you watch it, the more you get sucked into the play. Discovering all the subtle foreshadowing in the plot and action leading up to the final climax makes you really excited. With all the new gags and adlibs thrown in, you can't even get sick of it. It seems almost like a waste for it to be shown in only Tokyo and Osaka, and a waste to let it be seen by only the wota or theater-lovers. It's a quirky production, but still a great one that I want as many people as possible to see it」

Of course, many of those who watched it were Hello! Project fans, so you would expect the rave praise, but even so, for this musical especially, the impact seems to have been so strong that the overwhelming response has been 「You have to go watch this」.

Also, the 12th D-boys stage production 『TRUMP』 (Producer: Suemitsu Kenichi)seems to have some sort of connection with 『Lilium』, and stocks of its DVD has been critically low on Amazon, so it seems like even the related material has benefited from the ripple effect of increased interest.

For some background on the rave reviews for 『Lilium』, we have spoken to the folks at Geinou Rider who are well versed on idols in theater.

「For previous Hello! Project productions, there was a lot of idol-related content, and it was undoubtedly marketed towards the fans, but beginning with the production 『3 Billion Yen Shoujo』 starring Berryz Koubou which was based off a real incident, they started taking on more productions that had less to do with idol-related material.

This time with 『Lilium』 and as well as with the other Suemitsu Kenichi production 『Stacies』, they are challenging themselves with darker stories. Instead of the cute and sweet idols you usually enjoy, you are able to observe a different side of them through the musicals」

This is why fans of theater are now paying attention to Hello! Project productions.

「Depending on the scriptwriter or producer, there seems to be many theater fans who would come to watch Hello! Project productions. With the expectation that it was just another idol production, most of them are shocked by the higher than expected levels of acting skill and singing prowess; this is what we often hear from regular theater-goers. There are even theater fans who have become Hello! Project wota after watching their productions」

『LILIUM ─Shoujo Junketsu Kageki─』 will be running at Tokyo Ikebukuro Sunshine Theater until June 15th, and will be also showing on June 20th and 21st at Osaka Morinomiya Piloti Hall. Even if you aren't a fan of Hello! Project,『Lilium』 is definitely worth a watch.
